Calm in the Canopy: A Garden Retreat of Green and Brick

Foothill meadow residence, hero photograph
Location Greater Sacramento area
Scope Backyard redesign

Once a plain lawn with scattered shrubs, this backyard has been reimagined into a richly layered sanctuary that invites both solitude and connection. Winding pathways of reclaimed brick from the 1920s and 1930s weave through the garden, guiding visitors into a sequence of distinct landscape “rooms.” Each area offers its own atmosphere, with a varied mix of perennials, fragrant roses, colorful seasonal plantings, and structural shrubs that bring contrast, texture, and year-round interest.

A cozy bench nestled beneath the trees offers space for quiet retreat, while another bench closer to the house, accented with colorful pillows, creates a welcoming spot for conversation and gathering. A new garden studio, designed as both office and creative space, blends seamlessly into the landscape, with a discreet outdoor shower nearby that adds spa-like luxury and enhances the sense of escape.

The covered patio extends the home outward, featuring a beautiful space for al fresco dining alongside a custom fountain whose gentle sound adds calm to the setting. Thoughtfully placed art and subtle lighting further enrich the garden's ambiance, allowing it to shift gracefully from day into evening.

Balancing natural beauty with purposeful design, this garden is more than an outdoor space. It is a series of inviting destinations, a living extension of home that nurtures both spirit and senses.

Before: Sparse Landscape with Untapped PotentialIn the original landscape, a wide expanse of lawn dominates the yard, with sparse shrubs, open space, and minimal shade. Mulch borders and a lack of structure left the area feeling exposed and underutilized. While open, the space lacked the sense of intimacy, comfort, and layered beauty the redesigned garden now brings to life.

Before: Exposed Patio and Sparse SurroundingsBefore the transformation, the covered patio opened onto a vast, sun-drenched lawn with minimal plantings and little sense of enclosure. Small shrubs dotted the edges, but the space felt bare and uninviting. The landscape lacked the layered planting, softness, and shade that now define the garden's inviting character.

Before: Unscreened and UnderplantedThis view reveals a wide, open lawn with minimal planting and no privacy screening, leaving clear sightlines into the neighboring property. With little structure or shade, the space felt exposed and unfinished—lacking the intimacy, layering, and sense of retreat that now define the transformed garden.

Before: Sun-Soaked and UnfinishedIn this view from the front of the garage, the landscape feels exposed and unrefined, with minimal planting and no sense of privacy or enclosure. Harsh sun dominates the space, and the lack of layering or structure leaves the area feeling stark—offering little of the softness, color, and seclusion that now shape the garden's welcoming design.
